When Sons of Anarchy began, Tara's main role was arguably as the damsel in distress. After being followed back to Charming by Agent Kohn, Jax was able to save her and keep her safe. However, she soon evolved into something far greater than this.
Becoming a mother, and finding something other than herself to protect, as well as being taken under the wing of Gemma, Tara grew to be one of the most ruthless and manipulative characters in the entire show.
She killed Salazar's girlfriend, she gave Jax the blood thinner so he could kill Clay, and she physically fought for her life in prison. Everything she did was for her family, and ultimately to get her children safe and out of Charming and the footsteps of their father.
In the chaotic life of these outlaws, Tara was the voice of reason, seemingly the only one questioning the danger, stability, and longevity of such a lifestyle. Yet, at the same time, she was forced to stoop to those same levels of wrong in order to do what she thought was right. No one else in the entire show would have faked a pregnancy and miscarriage just to discredit Gemma's name, even Agent Stahl would have thought twice about that.
