South Park: 10 Most Disturbing Episodes
5. Cartman Sucks - Season 11, Episode 2
Never ones to shy away from the most harrowing of subject matter, this season eleven episode saw Matt Stone and Trey Parker take aim at gay conversion camps and pulled no punches in showing just how abhorrent these places actually are.
After being tricked into a compromising position by Cartman, Butters is shipped away to Camp New Grace, a facility designed to help its prisoners to 'pray the gay away'. We're immediately shown the damaging effects of such a place, with its highly traumatised inmates being prone to suicide and self-harm in order to repress their true selves.
Butters typical naivety means that he's seemingly unaffected by much of the camp's nastiness, remaining upbeat and positive in spite of the overwhelmingly grim conditions. His overall confusion as to what's going on plays perfectly into the episode's subject matter and leads to many great gags that produce plenty of belly laughs.
Thankfully, the episode does have something of an upbeat ending, in which Butters manages to save one of his fellow campers from succumbing to pressures of Camp New Grace, but the inherent darkness of its subject matter still lingers long after the closing credits.
