Star Trek: 10 Best Romulan Episodes
1. The Defector
In the ultimate game of bluff, a Romulan Defector is detected by the crew of the Enterprise D. He is fleeing a Warbird. They manage to rescue Sub-Lieutenant Setal, who brings them vital intelligence of a possible Romulan invasion. Setal insists that he is nothing more than a logistics clerk who has stumbled on this data. After some probing, it is revealed that Setal is in fact Admiral Jarok of the Romulan Star Empire. He implores Picard to investigate Nelvana III, where the Romulan fleet supposedly masses. Picard reluctantly agrees.
When the Enterprise arrives at Nelvana III, they are caught in an ambush by their frequent sparring partner Commander Tomalak. Admiral Jarok has been used as an unwitting pawn to lure the Enterprise into the Neutral Zone. Tomalak seeks to instigate a war and blame the Federation. However, Picard has a trick up his sleeve and at his signal, three Klingon Birds Of Prey reveal themselves and force the Romulans to stand down. Tomalak states that there will be no war this day. Overcome with shame, Admiral Jarok takes his own life.
The constant determination of the Romulans to gain the upper hand on their opponents means that they often overreach, but remain deadly none-the-less. Despite these episodes showing many of their mistakes and defeats, there are so many more stories of the Romulans. The rigid culture they live under and the insidious reach of the Tal Shiar overshadows them, but their passions burn brightly. Ten episodes isn't quite enough to do justice to one of the Federation's greatest rivals.
