Star Trek: 10 Examples Of Incredibly Lazy Alien Makeup

7. The "Alternative Earth" - The Original Series

All Our Yesterdays

Ah. A true example of lazy makeup. Don't use any. Let's trawl back through The Original Series - Miri, The Return of the Archons, Patterns of Force, A Piece of the Action, All Our Yesterdays, the list goes on. Save the budget, shoot it on existing sets at Paramount Pictures and avoid spending a penny on even one alien facial. It's a winner all round and Fred B Phillips could knock off home early after sticking Nimoy's ears on; bonus. This is probably Star Trek at it's laziest and perhaps most budget constrained especially in the third season where every alien race seems to be oddly Earth-centric as the money trickled away. The Bottle Show to No Alien Makeup ratio must be nearing 1:1 at some point. The Alternative Earth scenario was conspicuously dumped by the time of The Next Generation but there's still the occasional offender in season one - Justice's Edo and the Ligons in Code of Honor jump straight to mind. Whenever an alien race in later years appeared with no makeup I came to the conclusion they were saving the cash for a big episode coming up but perhaps it's a case of no makeup over bad makeup here. A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
