Star Trek: 10 Minor Villains Who Were Awesome

1. Mirror Spock (Mirror, Mirror - The Original Series)

Would you have expected anything less?

We could have counted Sulu here as well just for that awesome scar he sports for the episode but there was always going to be a clear victor here. One episode, one appearance and a goatee have nailed this character into the stuff of legend - and he's responsible for the state of the galaxy when we revisit the mirror universe in Deep Space Nine (reforms? tut tut...).

Calculating, logical and duty-driven, he's the ultimate baddie first officer. Not evil per se, just focused on a different set of morals than we would see in the Prime Universe Spock. His use and disposal of Kyle's agoniser shows there is nothing he cares about except his duty to the ship and the captain. He is still Spock, just a little different. His actions are smooth and fluid, the lack of emotion makes him even less approachable and colder than ever but yet we can still recognise the character; the logic that is lurking beneath. For one appearance there are very few characters who garner so much attention €“ maybe Khan is the other exception here, but seeing the usual Commander Spock with facial hair, a lower rumble in the voice places him in a different league to the rest of the crew. Always aware of the activities occurring around the ship, he picks up that Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura are not who they seem but still takes on board the suggestions Kirk leaves him before they jump universes. One of the great characters of The Original Series - a shame that the Terran Empire fell after taking James T's advice!

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
