Born from the new era of Star Trek, Prodigy is barely into its first season and is already proving to be a popular addition to the Trek family.

Even from the opening seconds of the Michael Giacchino scored titles, the sense of adventure and wonderment is like a ready to overload warp core. Even with that mid-midseason break, the momentum hasn't dropped and each week is building on the previous instalment.

Throwing together a very mixed bag of characters like no other Star Trek series has done or been able to do before, Prodigy is on the very edge of not just exploring the galaxy but a whole host of alien races both new and old. This is where it gets particularly clever.

Not only does the Star Trek moniker entice existing fans eager to see a new take on their favourite franchise but the action and adventure, cool ships and exciting stories each week offer a new portal in for fans who may never have seen the show before. Designed for a younger market, Prodigy has a youthful crew but still echoes the Starfleet code and the foundations that made the show great thanks to Captain Janeway.

Here is a way to maintain the pace while also laying down the basics of what Star Trek is about and also introduce youngsters to the wonders of the future in cool ships and engaging stories. Here we will take a look at the biggest elements that make Prodigy an immediate success.

10. Old School Stories

Prodigy has kept it simple from day one.

The underlying story of the Diviner chasing the ship exists and provides something to entice viewers back who enjoy seeing something evolve. It gives a realistic passing of time and in turn the need to push the characters forward.

This is absolutely key to the show with each of the currently aired episodes expanding the crew but also staying true to the very core themes and principles that have made Star Trek great across the decades.

Lost and Found assembled a group of unlikely allies as a new family guided by Starfleet principles; Starstruck dropped in the first hints at exploration; First Con-tact did what it said on the tin. We have Janeway here to take fans who are new to Star Trek through the basics as we investigate it in each episode. While events might not run as smoothly as they might do with a full Starfleet crew under Picard on the Enterprise-D, the Protostar's cadets are learning every day.

Maybe it's not exactly exploring the Human Condition so literally since the only character of Earth origin is a hologram but it is looking at the emergence of a family and team who are putting aside their differences for the better.

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
