According to a biography of the Caitian communications officer M'Ress provided by the Star Trek memorabilia catalog company Lincoln Enterprises, the Kzinti were related to the Caitians. Like Romulans and Vulcans, their cultures developed very differently.

Caitians were fierce warriors when they needed to be but prided themselves on their accomplishments in art and philosophy rather than their martial prowess. Kzinti were fierce warriors obsessed with achieving valorous deeds. Kzinti regarded Kzinti females as little more than animals, only suitable for breeding. Caitian males and females are depicted as equally intelligent and Caitians of both sexes have been depicted as members of Starfleet.

The two species also looked very different from one another. Caitians tended to be small and sinewy while Kzinti were hulking brutes over two meters tall. Some Caitians could even have a very human-like appearance. As confirmed by co-writer Damon Lindelof, the alien twins that Kirk slept with in Star Trek: Into Darkness were Caitians.
