The Traveler, from Tau Alpha C, was a benign being who possessed great understanding of both warp fields and the greater mysteries of the Universe. He did not believe that he existed outside of time, as he understood it - though cryptically, he felt that he did exist outside of time as Starfleet understood it.

The Traveler's story has most often been linked with Wesley Crusher, whom he described as being like a young Mozart in terms of potential. On their initial meeting, he was responsible for hurtling the Enterprise-D to the distant M-33 Galaxy and required Wesley's help to get the ship home again.

Their next encounter involved the pair of them opening doors to another reality, trying to save Dr. Crusher from a rapidly collapsing universe that Wesley had created. They were successful, though this saw a greater unity in their abilities.

The final appearance of the Traveler took place as Wesley was growing more and more unsure of his place in life, particularly with his place at Starfleet Academy. The Traveler appeared in the form of Lakanta, a Native American colonist. While the rest of the colony was facing forced relocation as part of the Starfleet and Cardassian peace treaty, Lakanta helped Wesley to understand his path lay in the greater mysteries of the universe. Together, they stepped outside of time, moving forward into a new journey together.
