Star Trek: 15 Best Holodeck Moments

5. Our Man Bashir - The Villain Wins?

Star Trek Worf

Dr. Bashir is James Bond here, no questions asked. However, you have to look very closely if you want to find any direct borrowing from Bond, as Paramount did not have the rights to the character. There had been plans, had this episode been received well (which it was) to revisit this program often. Then the postman arrived.

Though the contents of the letter have never been officially revealed, a missive from MGM that was sent to the producers proved that they did not find the Bond references to be very funny at all. And that was the end of Bashir's turn as a secret agent.

The episode was significant for Alexander Siddig and Nana Visitor though, as it was during production on this episode that they became romantically involved, eventually having a son, Django, together. This pregnancy was written into the show when Kira carries the O'Briens' baby to term. It is a particular of Visitor's, as she had a ball delivering her lines in a bad Russian accent, with her character reveal taking place on a spinning bed.

One of the most tongue-in-cheek elements of the plot features Hippocrates Noah actually winning at the end of the program. Bond villains all have a tendancy to reveal their plans to Bond, before he finds a way to defeat them. Noah even comments on this, after Bashir activates the lasers. 'Somehow, I didn't expect to win,' he muses, pointing the gun anyway.

A laugh riot throughout, this would have been a great story to revisit. In another life, maybe!
