Star Trek Characters That Need To Meet Each Other (Somehow)

8. Burnham And Sybok

burmy sybok

This is a pairing that must surely have happened already, though it has never been shown on screen. Burnham was already a child by the time she was adopted by Sarek and Amanda, while Spock was younger again. We know from dialogue that Spock and Sybok had dealings when the former was a ‘young man’, so with that timeline in place, it seems certain that Michael and Sybok crossed paths.

Sybok and Michael share something critical in the understanding of Spock’s family - they are both openly emotional, even though Michael initially attempted to adopt a more logical, Vulcan way of life. From Sarek’s point of view, there is something fascinating in how Sybok and Michael differ, but also in how they are the same. While Spock would have his own emotional journey, he was, arguably, the most Vulcan in the family.

Sybok offers a wealth of opportunity to explore the Vulcan condition and to display how Vulcans truly feel. Michael, feeling as she does with her human heart, offers both a counterfoil to him, but an incredible opportunity for them both to discuss the true cost, and joys, of growing up on Vulcan under the rigid structure therein.

We know, thanks to Strange New Worlds, that Sybok was in prison by the early 2260s, but what of the years before?
