Serak was a surprise feature from Discovery's first two episodes, and while he might not be an easter egg per se, he is a very significant character from the Star Trek mythos, what with him being Spock's dad and all.
It's a relation only longtime fans are likely to get at this point, as Discovery opted not to highlight Serak's relation to the franchise's most iconic character in its episode. Still though, it's exciting to see such an important character in the mythos take centre stage in the series, especially when James Frain plays the part so well.
Not only that, but we also got to see him deliver two key moments in the show, providing both a mind meld and our first 'live long and prosper' of the year. That's pretty great no matter how you look at it, and while we're unlikely to see Spock later down the line, Serak is a fine Vulcan lead for Discovery to have.
