Star Trek: Every Chief Engineer Ranked

3. Montgomery 'Scotty' Scott

Captain Montgomery Scott was the original miracle worker on board the Enterprise. He remained with the ship until its destruction, moving to the Enterprise-A with the crew. The reputation as miracle worker is entirely well deserved.

Scott wrote many of the books on engineering, something he comments on to Geordi when they work together. He is unconventional in a way that drives the engineers of the future mad, rarely adhering to any kind of standard rules to get the job done. Scotty is of a breed of engineer that will fix the situation in the moment, rules be damned.

His expertise was second to none in his time, something he proved again and again. Once the Enterprise returned to Spacedock, he was immediately commandeered by Starfleet and assigned as Captain of Engineering on board the USS Excelsior, which at the time was undergoing trials for a Transwarp drive.

His role in the sabotage of the Excelsior may have hurt his career going forward, but he could still be called on to save the day. He was responsible for saving the Enterprise-B from the Nexus, though at the cost of Captain Kirk. Years later still, after spending decades in suspended animation, he was repsonsible for saving the Enterprise-D from the Dyson Sphere.

Serving aboard four Enterprise's in various capacity, he is one of the most prolific engineers in Starfleet - the one who wrote the history books on what it is to be the miracle worker.
