Tasha Yar was a fascinating character that was killed off too early. Yar had a compelling background. She was one of the few characters on the show who hadn’t come from idyllic conditions.

Yar grew up on a war-torn world where she’d survived as a freedom fighter. This background would have made for a thrilling revisit had the character survived. We do visit her planet, but with the stand-in of her sister who is gone by the next episode.

Unfortunately, the actor, Denise Crosby, described her role as set dressing on the show. And so, early on Tasha was killed off by the writers. Her death isn’t handled very well and feels a bit shallow. Luckily, Crosby returned for several guest appearances. And, Tasha had a role in an alternate timeline episode.
