Star Wars Rebels Season 3: 20 Easter Eggs & References You Need To See

11. Maul's Memories

In Visions and Voices, Ezra agrees to go with Maul willingly to his home planet of Dathomir, where Maul has collected a treasure trove of references and artefacts related to his past. Scattered around the room are discarded battle droid heads, Mandalorian helmets from when he ruled their people, but most curiously, there is a familiar, cubist painting of the former Duchess Satine of Mandalore.

In The Clone Wars, Maul lured Obi-Wan to Mandalore, despite the protesting of the Jedi Council, and used Satine as an instrument in his revenge; to make Obi-Wan feel the pain and suffering that Maul had felt all those years whilst on the very brink of death. What’s more interesting (or disturbing) is that the painting is used as some sort of shrine, with the weapon that used to kill her – the Darksabar – cradled before it.

Many suspected that this was because Maul didn’t actually want to hunt down and kill Obi-Wan, but to find him and beg for forgiveness, which would have been a rather unexpected turn for the character, albeit an interesting one.

But if you look closely at the scene, there is ancient Sith maddeningly writing scrawled on the wall which translates into a single word: KENOBI

And as we know from Twin Suns, he didn’t want to make amends.
