Star Wars Rebels Season 3: 20 Easter Eggs & References You Need To See
13. Saxon's Origins
In Imperial Supercommandos, the character of Gar Saxon was developed from The Clone Wars episode arc that never made it to production, but instead was developed into the Dark Horse comic series, Son of Dathomir, that followed the events of Maul after his incarceration at the hands of Chancellor Palpatine.
Saxon can be identified by his distinct horned helmet design, with a glowing orange visor. But this isn’t the first time that we have probably seen him. In The Clone Wars episode, Lawless, a Mandalorian in the service of Maul is seen with that same horned helmet design. At the time he was an unnamed and non-speaking role, but likely later developed to have a more prominent position in the Son of Dathomir series.
Saxon served as the commander of the Mandalorian Super Commandos in Maul’s Shadow Collective during The Clone Wars, was part of a two-man extraction team that rescued Maul from the Spire on Stygeon Prime (first featured in the Son of Dathomir comic and then again in the Rebels episode, Rise of the Old Masters) and later commanded the ground forces during General Grievous’ invasion of the Collective base on Ord Mantell.
After the Empire took over Mandalore, Saxon saw a bid for power and offered his services as Hand to the Emperor, becoming little more than a puppet leader like many before him. Alongside his duties as hand, he served as the leader of the Imperial Super Commandos, bringing him into contact with Sabine Wren.
