6. Cat Grant Loves Clark Kent

While everyone else is amazed by Superman, Kara’s boss Cat Grant is quite taken with plain old Clark Kent, who apparently has "some sway with her". This is a fun nod to the more usual version of the character.

Created in 1987, Cat was added to the comics as another romantic interest for Clark, in a bid to reshape the Lois/Clark relationship into a love triangle. The character being the head of her own media empire is completely new for Supergirl, as she is usually a gossip columnist at The Daily Planet. This also explains Cat’s scathing comments about Lois Lane, which recurred in season one and make a return here.

Seeing as Kara’s got a promotion, Cat found herself with a new assistant here – a certain Miss Teschmacher. This was also the name of Lex Luthor’s moll in 1978’s Superman movie and Superman II, as played by Valerie Perrin. The way Cat barks her name also recalls Gene Hackman’s preferred method of summoning her.
