Supergirl Season 4: 4 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Menagerie'

Ups...

4. Brainy Is Better Than Ever

While the whole cast of Supergirl always give their all, Jesse Rath may have just secured his position as the season's M.V.P. after this week's episode. His character, Brainiac-5, has been a constant source of comic relief this season, but in 'Menagerie', he absolutely shined.

From attempting to help Nia train, completely unaware of the fact that she was grieving, to looking up Valentine's Day presents for her at work, Brainy went on a rollercoaster of sorts this week (a running theme this season) that both furthered his emotional arc and provided us with some of his finest moments yet.

There is something oddly hilarious about a techno-organic 12th-level intellect from the future, who is capable of deducing with near-certainty the inevitable outcome of almost anything, locking himself in a closet out of fear that Nia's over-enthusiastic roommate would dance with him. Like most of Brainy's storylines, the sheer ridiculousness of it works because of Rath's comically brilliant performance.

By the end of the episode, the character was now fully aware of the fact that he was attracted to Nia and, in a brief but tender moment, appeared mildly upset when she only needed his help for training - the irony of the situation being that the pair of them have swapped roles. As it's been a joy to watch his development progress, it's going to be really interesting to see how he deals with the newfound information and if he can win back her affection. Whatever he does, it's sure going to be a lot of fun watching him do it.
