Superman & Lois Review: 5 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Pilot'

Downs...

2. A Heavy Intro

Superman and Lois
The CW

The premise of Superman and Lois revolves around the Kent family moving back to Smallville because things aren't going well for them in Metropolis and a tragedy ultimately forces the heroes to re-evaluate their lives in the city. Though that comes across incredibly well, it would be hard to deny that the opening act of the premiere leans pretty heavily on the emotional threads.

It does add a great deal to the plot and none of its feels superfluous in any way, but the amount of obstacles that the Kents must endure in the first 18 minutes of the episode does leave you a little emotionally exhausted quite early in. Sure, it hammers home the notion that life - and this show - doesn't always turn out like you expect it, but if it all transpired over a longer period of time, it might be a little, well, less heavy.

But that is the aim of Superman and Lois and it all paves the way for much more hopeful moments to come later in the premiere. So if those first 20 minutes do leave you feeling a little overwhelmed, it's definitely worth sticking with it because there's so much good after that.
