8. Season 8 - Sacrifice
Ah yes, yet another Supernatural finale to make it into this list.
After going through two brutal trials to close the Gates of Hell, Sam has one more trial to compete before the gates are closed for good. Sam and Dean end up tricking and capturing Crowley to be the sacrifice so Sam can “cure a demon” to complete the third and final trial.
During this time, Castiel has teamed up with Metatron to close the Gates of Heaven so all angels and demons are locked away forever. The episode certainly lived up to its name as Sam is willing to sacrifice himself to finish the trials and Metatron uses Castiel as his own sacrifice after tricking him into kicking all the angels out of Heaven and taking his Grace away turning him into a human being.
The spectacular performances from both Jared Padalecki and Mark Sheppard solidified the episode, especially Sheppard’s as he reveals many sides of his character we’ve never seen before. Ending in one of the most awe-inspiring haunting final images of all the angels falling from Heaven, Sacrifice was defiantly the stand-out episode of the season.
