Since season 11, Sheldon and Amy have been working together on a project regarding super-asymmetry, with a major development about their plan being discovered in the season finale before their wedding. Some additional research in the early days of season 12 discovered that a paper had already been written that proved the theory to be untrue, but 'ShAmy' kept working on their paper after things changed.

If they manage to prove the theory to be true, a scientific prize (such as the highly prestigious Nobel Prize) could very well be on their way. A common trend in The Big Bang Theory is that all of Sheldon's theories tend to be proven incorrect, something that we'd all like to see change.

Everyone and their dog knows how much a Nobel Prize would mean to Sheldon and his career. Not only that, but if he were to share the spotlight with Amy then it would mark a huge step forward for his character. Sharing things, especially things of a high calibre in terms of scientific recognition, has never been one of Sheldon's best traits.
