Because Black Noir never speaks or takes off his mask, he's been the most mysterious member of The Seven.

But in the episode, Barbary Coast, we learn he was a relatively normal Supe until he suffered brain damage during a mission. As tragic as this revelation is, it's all the more heartbreaking when we learn the origin of his injury.

When Noir discovered his former teammate, Soldier Boy, was killing each member of his old squad, Payback, the silent superhero went into hiding. After seeking shelter, Noir's broken mind tried to make sense of what happened with him and Soldier Boy, causing an array of cartoon characters to talk to him. Hoping to help Black Noir, his Disney-like friends put on a play, recounting his experience with the superpowered patriot.

In this anthropomorphised presentation, we see how Soldier Boy ruled Payback with an iron fist, pounding his allies to a pulp to keep them in line. Tired of being beaten and humiliated, Noir agreed to trade Soldier Boy to the Russians.

But before the supersoldier was knocked out, he took a chunk out of Noir's brain, rendering him mentally impaired. Despite all the evil Noir has committed, you can't help feeling sorry for him in this moment.
