Earth-1's Barry Allen may not have had to sacrifice himself after all, but you gotta hand it to 'Crisis On Infinite Earths, Part Three' for going out of its way to make us think that he would. The truth is that we always knew he was going to survive (The Flash can't continue without The Flash), but it was the beauty of the writing that almost convinced us otherwise, and that was down to the abundance of touching moments that he shared with his wife Iris West-Allen.

There was an inevitability about the pair's tender parting moment that was both heartbreaking and hopeful, reminding us that the one thing more powerful than the Crisis was enduring love. And it felt authentic - not in a 'goodbye' way but more of a 'see you on the other side'. It was heartfelt, as they accepted Barry's fate and yet knew that he'd never stop fighting his way back to her - something he did in the episode's final act.

Barry and Iris' scenes were a three-act play in themselves, starting with the brief farewell before giving us the full farewell and finally, the reunion.

We knew that Barry Allen was never going to die, but the fact is that the characters around him did. And that somehow made it easier to believe. But more importantly, it made the episode's subtle arc of Barry and Iris' love story all the more fulfilling.

This is how you write a leading couple that you can root for, and congratulations to both Grant Gustin and Candice Patton for turning in beautiful performances.
