The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Episode Six Review - 6 Ups & 3 Downs
6. Up - Revelation Of Adar's Backstory
For weeks, Adar was wrapped in mystery as to who and what he actually is. Was he an elf, or perhaps some kind of orc? It turns out, he was both. Sort of.
After being defeated by the forces of Númenor and captured by Halbrand and Galadriel, he is revealed to be from the first group of orcs known in Middle-earth. Once an elf, he transformed due to the strong and twisted power of the darkness, turning him into one of the first of many to follow that path.
But his backstory also shows just how much he sees the orcs as something more than monsters, as Sauron's murderous experiments to seek power beyond the living resulted in the deaths of many of his children. With his unique viewpoint, Adar claims to have killed Sauron to avenge his fallen orcs, explaining the reason why the big-bad has yet to appear.
This scene may be brief, but it opens up more questions than answers and makes the mutated elf a villain with more dimensions than previous baddies seen in The Lord of the Rings franchise. What his end goal is with the volcano remains a mystery, but this cunning foe certainly has gone through plenty of heartache and sorrow that some may not have expected.
