Movie parody: Mary Poppins (1964)
The Simpsons were never shy of breaking out into song and dance, from "Who needs the Kwik-E-Mart?" in Homer and Apu to "Monorail" in Marge vs. The Monorail, and not forgetting the iconic Do The Bartman.
But it was not until season eight that the producers would do a fully fledged musical - one that parodied a beloved Disney classic of the 1960s.
When Marge begins to lose her hair from stress, the family decides to hire a nanny for some extra help. After a string of unsuitable candidates, a whimsical woman flies down to The Simpsons household via magic umbrella and introduces herself as Shary Bobbins. An obvious caricature of Mary Poppins, Ms. Bobbins soon gets The Simpson household into a more organised fashion and teaches the children valuable lessons about hard work - through the form of song.
Refreshingly, this joyous musical concludes with a hilariously morbid ending - as The Simpson family gleefully wave goodbye to Shary and ponder whether they'll encounter her again later in life, she is killed after being sucked into a jet engine turbine. Yikes!
