The Simpsons: 10 Greatest Recurring Characters Introduced After Season One
5. Mayor Quimby
A town as wacky and as crazy Springfield needs someone equally wacky and crazy to run it. Enter Mayor Diamond Joe Quimby, the man in charge of the town who has no trouble taking bribes, cheating on his wife, and stealing money raised for his town.
His first Springfield appearance came in the first episode of season two, as he declared a snow day after Bart's prayers came true.
He seemed innocuous enough to begin with, but soon his habits of adultery, debauchery, and embezzlement became apparent. One of the highlights of his early years in the show was his rivalry with Chief Wiggum. The two would argue about who had more authority in the town, and had a typical alpha male back and forth, however this didn’t last too long, as they soon found themselves as something of mutual beneficiaries.
The parody of US Senator Ted Kennedy, voiced expertly by Dan Castellaneta, evolved into a means for political satire in general, and the writers of the show clearly had as much fun playing with that idea as the fans did watching it.
