The Simpsons: 10 More Moments More Important Than You Realised
1. The First D’Oh
Homer's signature expression D'oh became so popular that it even entered the Oxford English Dictionary in 2001.
Whilst the phrase did exist long before The Simpsons came along, D'oh was definitely popularised by Homer's voice actor Dan Castellaneta. His delivery of the word is iconic, which makes all the more impressive that he came up with it all on his own.
Whilst recording for The Simpsons when it was just a short on The Tracey Ullman Show, Castellaneta came across a line marked "annoyed grunt". He was told to give it his own interpretation, which ended up being an impression of a character from an old Laurel and Hardy film.
With some guidance from Matt Groening, Castellaneta eventually perfected D'oh and his delivery of the word has remained almost exactly the same ever since.
Little did he know that day that he'd just created a piece of television history. The saying and the show are synonymous with each other and you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who doesn't immediately associate the sound with Springfield's most famous resident.
This entry deserves a... wait, what's the opposite of d'oh?
