The Simpsons: 10 Most HATED Episodes
7. Bart Vs. Itchy & Scratchy
Attempts at staying topical in an ever-changing world by providing social commentary can be a wise move, provided the execution lands satisfactorily. Unfortunately, making such political statements often have the unintended effect of skewering large portions of the audience themselves.
In what seems to be a dumbed-down parody of the controversy surrounding gender equality in entertainment, Bart initially leads the boys of Springfield in a protest against an all-female reboot of Itchy & Scratchy (get it?!!) until he actually watches the show and ends up enjoying it.
It's when Bart joins a radical all-girl prank group (or awareness bomb group, as they'd prefer) that wires get crossed, resulting in a blowback of hate from disgruntled viewers. Though the episode in fact blows both sides of the divide out of proportion, fans did not react well to the appearance of a show trying overly hard to be progressive and PC.
How very ironic that an episode making fun of people who get so worked up about trivial details such as the genders of fictional cartoon characters ended up so furiously lambasted by similarly passionate members of the internet - as its 4.5 IMDb rating shows.
