The Simpsons: 15 BEST Golden Age Episodes
5. Marge Vs. The Monorail
The general consensus surrounding Marge Vs. The Monorail predominantly consists of two largely shared opinions within the fanbase. A majority call it the greatest episode of the series - not just the Golden Age - which is an ongoing debate that will never be quelled. However, the latter opinion of this being the first real turning point for the series in terms of the outlandish stories it would become known for, as opposed to being just the first animated family sitcom in the Western world, is undeniable.
The overall quality of this episode is utter brilliance from commencement to culmination. The not-so-subtle nod to the parallels between Homer Simpson and Fred Flintstone, the courtroom scene that likens Mr. Burns to Hannibal Lecter, and, of course, the first of two guest appearances for the legendary Leonard Nimoy, which seems randomly thrown in, more than stand the test of time.
The praise isn't solely infatuated with the comedic premise and jokes that flourish from it, as the plot itself actually takes a seemingly dark and unexpected turn when Marge decides to investigate Lyle Lanley's background after his delightful demeanour hides the façade of something more sinister at play; the denizens of Springfield being at the core centre of what could spell out their deaths.
