Where there is Mr Burns, there is always Mr Smithers, and he's mostly a welcome sight. This character is a nice dose of reality in the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, as, despite the strange comings and goings of the place, he's always there to lend an analytical hand to the boss.

Regarding his character, he's slightly hard to pin down as he can go from being rude and obnoxious to polite and meek in an instant. But, this keeps Smithers on his toes as he feels like an ordinary person reacting to wild situations in a natural manner.

Plus, his unrequited romantic feelings for Mr Burns are always a great source of humour, as you can tell he could do better if he moved on from the rich monster, but for some inexplicable reason, he can't. Fans just want him to be happy, but he's too in love with his work - literally.
