Moe is the delicious slice of nihilism that this show needs. While there are plenty of dark moments throughout the series, most characters stick to being somewhat wholesome even if they shouldn't be - such as Barney. But Moe contrasts this, as he's the grotesque and often pessimistic side of The Simpsons that gives it some edge.

As the proprietor of Moe's Tavern, it's clear that this man is used to living a seedy and poorly lit life. He starts as a barkeeper who is not used to seeing the light of day, as his lack of people skills and poor looks make him a social pariah. But, as you get to know him, you find that he has deep feelings of loneliness, regret and a desire to be loved, which is both tragic and hilarious.

Seeing the darker shades of his life gives him some depth, but his mean-spirited comedy will always help you laugh through his less wholesome moments.
