3. Prison Invasion

Hershel's death is the other contender for the saddest death, mainly because the old man was a true favourite and simply didn't deserve to die. The Governor's darkest moment came as he slashed Hershel's head off, sparking an amazing battle for the prison. The emotion of the death scene erupts into violence, and the whole end of the episode turns sour as the group is scattered, their community is destroyed, and they're thrust back to square one. It's a huge moment for the group and ignited a series of events that resulted in laying the groundwork for a lot of the action in Season 5.
