8. Where's Sophia?

Sophia's disappearance was one of the first, most tragic ongoing storylines in the fledgling series. It proved that the writers weren't afraid to break the limits of what is acceptable to show on television, and that opened the audience up to a whole new level of shocking moments.

Little zombified Sophia emerging from Hershel's barn was utterly heart-breaking, yet strangely serene to see Carol get some closure. Earlier in the hunt for her daughter, you can see the group can't cope with her vanishing. Top marks to Melissa McBride and Andrew Lincoln for this scene which I personally think was too good to leave out.
