One of the second season's prevailing mysteries is the disappearance of Carol's (Melissa McBride) daughter Sophia (Madison Lintz), who in the mid-season episode "Pretty Much Dead Already" is revealed to be one of the walkers in Hershel Greene's (Scott Wilson) barn, before being executed by Rick.

Once fans got the shock of Sophia's discovery and death out of their system, a question emerged - did Hershel know that Sophia was in his barn the whole damn time?

Fans often point to a scene in an earlier episode, "Cherokee Rose," where Shane (Jon Bernthal) asks what they're going to do if Sophia is already a walker.

Andrea (Laurie Holden) says that they'll tell Carol the truth, at which point Maggie (Lauren Cohan) gives her father Hershel a seemingly knowing look, before Hershel shakes his head.

In retrospect, many have interpreted this as confirming that Hershel and Maggie knew that Sophia was in the barn the whole time.

On the opposite side, though, it's also established that the walkers were placed in the barn by Otis (Pruitt Taylor Vince), and given that he was soon enough killed by Shane, it's entirely possible that he simply never told Hershel that Sophia was in the barn prior to his demise.
