Maybe Negan killed the show too.

Since The Walking Dead aired the now infamous season seven opener 'The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be', the show has been haemorrhaging viewers. That episode landed the show over 17 million viewers, but in the weeks since the ratings have crashed to just over 10 million.

While a dip was expected after such a highly anticipated event episode, the sharp plummet must be causing worry at AMC headquarters. The show has only gone from strength to strength since it began, but now all signs point to fans getting fed up with it.

In all honesty, this reaction has been awhile coming, with the shows in-built issues only becoming more pronounced with each passing year. The negative and - in some cases - sickened reactions to the opening episode have only served to highlight these problems to loyal viewers, who’ve voted with their remotes by switching off en masse.

To explain this downturn, let’s look at some of the key issues with The Walking Dead that are making fans turn off.

2016 has been a relentlessly miserable year for many reasons, so when people sit down to watch something they’re probably not seeking out more of it. That’s what The Walking Dead has become though: a grinding misery machine, where the heroes lose a lot, occasionally win, and then lose some more.

The repeated message is the new world is an awful place where people suffer unimaginable loss, then die horribly. The show has been stuck on this loop for the last few seasons, with season seven being a deep dive into the misery machine, and it looks set to continue milking it until at least the end of the current run.

Fans are tired of the grind, and rather than just subject themselves to wallowing in hopelessness out of loyalty to the show, they’ve decided to make a positive change.
