The second episode of TWD 'Guts' was a great one, with a very young Glenn teaching Rick how to survive the initial contact with walkers. The pair smother themselves in blood and gore from the walkers in order to pass through them undetected, and it worked perfectly until the rain came. Now, if that method was so effective, why aren't Rick and the gang doing this every single time they need to go on a supply run or dangerous mission? They don't need to mingle with the walkers as such, they'd just have another method of preventing the walkers from swarming them. Think of how many people have died on forays out into the world from a safe base. All they need to do is designate some clothes to be worn like a suit of armour, smothered in gore. It may not look or smell particularly great, but there's no room for vanity when a walker is preparing to snap its jaws around you.
