The Walking Dead: 5 Characters Who Overstayed Their Welcome (And 5 Gone Too Soon)
8. Enid – Overstayed Their Welcome
Enid has been on the show for 20 episodes and counting, dating all the way back to season 5. It’s obvious the creation of the character was done to give Carl an intriguing love interest, but giving him one that is already an experienced and adept survivor does little to add to the story.
Pairing Enid and Carl together does little more than make a mini-version of Rick and Michonne. Giving Carl a love interest was clearly done to provide younger viewers a relatable romantic relationship on the show, but it would have been more prudent to have introduced Carl’s love interest as an inexperienced Alexandria resident, allowing their relationship to build through Carl’s ability to protect and teach her survival skills. There’s nothing wrong with a young lady being able to fight and defend herself, but Rick and Michonne already have the ‘two badasses fall in love’ story arc on lockdown.
Enid’s future on the show now seems to be tied to Maggie and the Hilltop making her existence on the show even more puzzling. Separating her from Carl removes her one apparent purpose on the show. Perhaps under Maggie’s tutelage her character will finally begin to develop and define her own purpose in the apocalypse. But for now, she remains a second fiddle character on a show that has far too many characters already.
