The first episode in season four's harrowing flu arc, Infected finds the community blindsided by the emergence of a disease that leads to several deaths and a deadly walker outbreak.
The episode continues to dig into Rick's mental state since he relinquished his leadership of the group, whilst also balancing its various action sequences, shock deaths and mystery with a palpable sense of dread that promises a different season than most were perhaps expecting.
Some the season's most important developments start here, including Carol's adopting of orphans Lizzie and Mika Samuels, and the fiery demise of Tyreese's sick girlfriend Karen.
Infected is a grim spectacle, setting up some nasty surprises down the line, even if it uses much of its middle act as an exposition dumping ground.
