The season premiere strikes an impressive balance between the show's action-heavy traits and its compelling attention to character development.
Months after the defeat of The Governor, Rick has settled down to life as a peaceful farmer with Hershel, whilst Michonne spends her days hunting The Governor and Daryl takes control of the group's supply runs.
30 Days without an Accident is a simple but affecting opening which allows Rick to take better care of Carl and later confront some of the world's lingering horrors, whilst Daryl's latest mission goes wrong and life at the prison is presented as content and safe.
The way it which it presents Rick as a changed man but also highlights the dangers still lurking around him is remarkable, and though it's not as large-scaled as later episodes, it's still a low-key season stand-out.
