Mid-way through season eight, Carl came into contact with lone survivor Siddiq (Avi Nash). The two became friends and Carl joined him on his quest to kill a group of walkers.

In the fight, Carl found himself bitten on the torso. Though he didn't tell anyone at first, instead keeping it secret so he could save Alexandria from the Saviours, he eventually revealed the truth to his father and Michonne, and gave a heartbreaking goodbye before shooting himself to prevent reanimation.

His death wasn't well received, but it was very well done despite its faults.
