The Walking Dead Season 11 Review: 9 Ups & 1 Down From "On The Inside"
2. UP: The Horror Homages
As noted, Greg Nicotero's direction of On the Inside is fantastic, and much of his style throughout the episode brings to mind the work of Wes Craven, John Carpenter and Nicotero's late mentor George A. Romero.
For example, the cold open, which focusses on Connie and Virgil attempting to find shelter, pays effective homage to the Romero classic Night of the Living Dead, and the Ferals themselves were inspired by the Craven classic The People Under the Stairs, the latter of which Nicotero provided the make-up effects for.
The Walking Dead has always referenced Romero's work in particular, and to see On the Inside feature so many allusions to other horror classics is amazing, and helps elevate the scares of the episode to new heights.
