The Walking Dead: Season 9 Episode 1 Explained

5. Gregory's Comics Death

Gregory has managed to weasel out of a number of tricky situations that should've been the end of him, but he's always been marked for death. A slimeball like that can't keep on surviving, and it all catches up with him this week.

After the death of Ken on her watch, Gregory conspires to have Maggie murdered, but inevitably things don't go to plan. Maggie confronts Gregory and, after he botches another attempt on her life, has to pay with his, as Maggie has him hanged in front of the rest of the community.

It's a huge moment for Maggie, and comes from the pages of the comics: again, deaths of Hilltop residents are the instigating event, but Gregory tries to poison Maggie only to be foiled by Jesus. It happens quite a while after the end of All Out War, however, so they have expedited things here - partially as Gregory was outstaying his welcome, but also with Lauren Cohan only around for six episodes this season, things are going to have to happen at a faster rate.
