The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Review - 6 Ups & 4 Downs From "Gone"

5. Up: The Gas Attack

The Ones Who Live
AMC

"Gone" holds a special distinction in the world of The Walking Dead: Not only does it feature one of the franchise's worst action beats - the preposterous rocket-launcher scene - but it also features one of its very best.

Strong words they may be, but partway through the episode, just as Michonne, Nat, Aiden and Bailey have formed a lasting rapport after sharing tall tales by a campfire, they're suddenly attacked by the CRM, who drop chlorine gas on them.

The effects of the gas, first encountered in The World Beyond, are devastating, leaving the group beaten, breathless, and resorting to oxygen tanks to stay alive. Aiden and Bailey both die (off-screen, annoyingly), but Michonne and Nat struggle on, taking over a year to recover in an abandoned mall now their home.

The gas attack sequence is a beautiful, horrible beast, brightly coloured and claustrophobic, though its effects on the plot is perhaps more powerful: Seeing Michonne this broken, weak and lost - even after all she's been through - is tough to stomach, though it at least brings her and Nat together in a deeply moving way.
