Titans Season 1: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Origins'

Ups...

4. No Excessive Violence

Ever since the first trailer of Titans debuted, it's been hard to really understand what the creative team behind the show are trying to achieve. Unfortunately, the first couple of episodes did little to help us figure that out. Despite the fact that the show has a strong and compelling narrative, it often throws its potential away, wasting time on gratuitous and unnecessary violence instead of furthering the story. Needless to say, it comes off like the show is just trying to be edgy and looks for any old excuse to throw in some dodgy CGI blood.

Thankfully, there was absolutely none of that in the latest instalment. As it was a more character-driven episode, there was little action and thus, no need for excessively violent fight scenes. However, there were also no attempts to be edgy as it primarily focused on telling the story over anything else.

Sure, the father of The Nuclear Family was burned alive by Starfire, but the scene highlighted how beautiful and majestic she looked as she glistened with power instead of lingering on the man's fiery demise - and that is progress.

It's looking like Titans is finally coming into its own and learning that less is more. After this week's episode, it certainly seems like its focusing more on the substance and less on the style, which is undoubtedly the right move.
