6. Jimmy and Richard (Boardwalk Empire)

Two veterans of the first World War, Richard and Jimmy were just as scarred and damaged as each other, and whilst Richard's are clearly visible after having had half his face blown off, Jimmy's go much deeper than the skin. Meeting in a veteran's hospital, their conversation begins simply enough but it's obvious that there is an unspoken understanding between the two of them, and Richard quickly becomes embroiled in Jimmy's criminal activities. One suspects it is mostly from a yearning to forge a human connection with somebody, anybody, who can look past his scars. Jimmy and his wife Angela do just that, with Angela even going so far as to paint a portrait of Richard sans mask. It's this quiet act of kindness that makes Richard feel so welcome in the Darmody household that practically guarantees unwavering loyalty to Jimmy. When Jimmy attempts to usurp Nucky as king of Atlantic City in season two, Richard is with him every step of the way, even offering to go with him for the inevitable showdown between Jimmy and Nucky, knowing full well what the consequences will be. Jimmy marches to his death, knowing it, but insists on Richard staying behind and making him promise to try and start living again and to come home from the war. Even with Jimmy dead, Richard continues to look after his and Angela's son Tommy, ensuring the memory of his parents is not forgotten and unloading a shotgun barrel in Manny Horovitz's face for murdering Angela. Jimmy may be dead, but Richard is still very much keeping the partnership alive.
