Twin Peaks: 10 Questions That Still Need Answering

5. Whose Side Is The Man From Another Place On?

The Man from Another Place is literally the severed half of the arm of the One-Armed Man. He inhabits the Red Room, attempts to help Agent Cooper solve his mystery and becomes instrumental in Cooper€™s possession by BOB. He also does a funny little dance and talks backwards. That is the extent of our knowledge of him. We aren€™t entirely sure if he is on particular sides or has any choice to do so. Is he an element of the White Lodge or Black Lodge? Why help Agent Cooper and then imprison him? The Man from Another Place seems to base his motives solely on the purchase of €œgarmonbozia,€ or pain and suffering. When BOB refuses to share the garmonbozia he gained from killing Laura Palmer, the MFAP becomes active in helping Agent Cooper solve the murder so he can reclaim what was his. But as soon as Agent Cooper enters the Red Room, the MFAP allows BOB to take possession of him, perhaps as some sort of garmonbozia trade-off. We are never given a clear picture of the political entanglement of denizens in the Red Room, who seem to control the events conspiring in the mortal world, with the MFAP being the prime director.
