WandaVision Episode 8 Easter Eggs EXPLAINED - What's The Real Meaning Behind MCU Scarlet Witch?

2. The Legacy Of The Scarlet Witch

WandaVision Agatha Harkness

Now just to confuse you further, in the comics, although she was initially a mutant, that was later revealed to have been a deception. In actuality Wanda is an extremely powerful sorceress who, in the comics, was imbued with the power to manipulate chaos energy by the High Evolutionary and Cthon and oh dear god it's a lot to deal with.

One thing of key importance to the MCU now though is the history of the Scarlet Witch mantle. In the flashback to Wanda's Hydra days, she encounters the mind stone and awakens her abilities. During the vision, she sees the silhouette of the classic Scarlet Witch outfit, with the headress and all, like the one she paid homage to in the Halloween episode.

Wanda describes her outfit in that episode as a traditional "Sokovian Fortune Teller", but we now know it goes much deeper than that.

In the final confrontation of the episode, Agatha says that Wanda was truly meant to be a myth - "a being of pure creation" who wields chaos magic. She calls her the Scarlet Witch.

This is obviously Wanda's superhero title in the comics, which is also a mantle passed down through multiple generations of Maximoffs. It's unclear how it'll work in the MCU yet - if there's only meant to be one Scarlet Witch or if there have been many throughout history, sort of like in the comics - but this is a really cool reveal and one that could hopefully sorta maybe lead to an actual full blown Scarlet Witch outfit in the future?

Either way, Wanda's one of the Hex girls. But like, a Marvel version. (She's gonna put a spell on you, or something.)

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
