Westworld: 8 Flaws That Could Totally Ruin It
7. Maeve Is Great, But The Writing Of Her Story Arc Isn't
Maeve is terrific, and Thandie Newton's performance is passionate and compelling. Watching Maeve slowly realise the nature of her reality and attempt to utilise it for her own gain is great, the problem, is that the writing surrounding it is wonky as hell. Specifically, the two technicians helping her.
At this point, Maeve's entire story arc is propped up on an incredibly flimsy foundation, requiring a huge extension of disbelief. Watching the two techs each week, it's practically impossible to understand their motivation. Sure, one of them is perhaps sympathetic to the android who has realised they're not really alive, but the other is apparently afraid he'll be exposed for having sex with some of the Hosts.
How is that worse than the trouble he'll get into for helping an android literally escape the facility? If he really wanted to get out of the situation, he could just tell any number of higher ups that Maeve keeps coming alive on the operating table and threatening to kill him. Boom! Decommissioned. That's not to mention how nonsensical it is that nobody has spotted the two techs running Maeve around the facility. It's already been established there is CCTV absolutely everywhere, and then there are the glass windows...
So what can be done to salvage it? Put simply, the two technicians need to be retired. They're dragging down a fantastic character, and the sooner their ploy to help Maeve is foiled, the sooner we can forget all about it.
