14. Zombies!
Most of the What If…? episodes from season one came from a tiny detail being changed from MCU history. This however, was one of the most popular what if stories from the comics, and arguably one of the most anticipated episodes of the entire show. It’s safe to say that it didn’t disappoint.
When Bruce Banner was sent to Earth by Heimdall, he was encountered first by a silent New York, before Cull Obsidian and Ebony Maw came down from the skies.
As the Hulk refused to show his green face, Bruce thought he was saved by the silhouettes of Tony Stark, Stephen Strange, and Wong. The three former heroes fought the two alien invaders in a battle mostly obscured by dust and shadow, and all was going well for Bruce until he realised what was actually happening.
The reveal of Tony Stark’s zombified face was incredibly jarring, and not to put too fine a point on it, epic. Bruce was then saved by a combination of Doctor Strange’s cloak, which managed to decapitate Wong with his own Sling Ring portal, and Hope van Dyne’s army of ants. This initial sequence was incredible, and set the scene nicely for the rest of the horrifying episode.
