Why Every Classic Companion Left Doctor Who
20. Deborah Watling - Victoria Waterfield
After seeing Deborah Watling on the front cover of the Radio Times to promote The Wednesday Play, Innes Lloyd was inspired to cast her as Victoria Waterfield, new companion to the Second Doctor.
Watling would be joined by her father Jack in two serials, The Abominable Snowmen and The Web of Fear. Eventually, the actress grew tired of the limitations of the character and decided to leave toward the end of season 5.
Who could blame Watling for being bored by Victoria, a character who would often be required to scream at monsters and generally get rescued by either Jamie. Even a potentially interesting romantic subplot was never explored - not on-screen at least, Hines and Watling briefly dated each other after her departure.
