10 Awesome WCW Moments You Forgot
1. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Shinjiro Otani
If you think pushing buzzwords is a new development in WWE, go back and count how many times Dusty Rhodes says 'WCW Where The Big Boys Play'. Michael Cole had to learn it from somewhere.
Let's not talk about buzzwords and bad commentary. Let's talk about forgotten classics, tremendous professional wrestling, a fantastic match between two all-time greats. Starrcade '95 was billed as the World Cup of Wrestling, a battle for supremacy between WCW and NJPW, giving fans such curious matches as Johnny B. Badd vs. Masa Saito and Randy Savage vs. Hiroyoshi Tenzan. Magic.
Eddie Guerrero vs. Shinjiro Otani was the highlight. That's obvious, how could anything be better than that? Guerrero, a true all-time great, and Otani, a junior heavyweight trailblazer who went on to become the first WCW Cruiserweight Champion. Otani was in full Young Lion mode here, black trunks and Boston Crabs, but he managed to pick up the victory over the future WWE Champion.
The result doesn't matter. What matters is the 13 minutes of action that comes before it, a showcase of athleticism and storytelling that wouldn't look out of place on any modern-day wrestling show. This should be compulsory viewing for anyone looking to understand the intricacies of professional wrestling, the nuts and bolts that make the exciting bits, well, exciting. A forgotten classic, and then some.
